August 16 Late Season Tornadofest

Mark Farnik, Sean Mullins, and I scored a late season tornado fest yesterday in NE Colorado.  Gotta love those beefy Colorado boundaries!  We observed four tornadoes, two of which were landspouts and two of a supercellular nature.

Third tornado of the day in Morgan County
This was the most classic and, in my opinion, the best tornado of the day.  You can see the RFD cutting around the tornado, signifying its supercellular nature.  Although it was of a mesocyclonic origin, tornadogenisis likely occured because of boundary interaction.  Unfortunately this tornado did cause damage, although it appears nobody was injured.  A picture of the tornado:

I thought I captured some footage of the fourth tornado, but instead of hitting the record button I put my camcorder on standby. Doh...

A bonus to the day: I've finally discovered why all of my pictures come out with the whites overexposed...I've been leaving the aperture all the way open all the time.  Just part of the learning process, I guess.

Great surprise, and a perfect kick-off to my senior year in highschool.

  1. I've done that with my video camera before too, man... like on April 22nd for example. Oh well, it definitely teaches ya' to make sure it's on record! I about panic every time now! Lol.

  2. Yea, frustrating, but I'll always have that video in my head. All that matters. I remember your post about that happening back on that day and told myself that I'd never let that happen haha. Looks like I was wrong.
